Saint Louis, MO - $20 1875 Fr. 431 The Fourth NB Ch. # 283 PCGS Very Fine 25. All genres of American paper currency in the Newman Collection have yielded exciting discoveries, and this note is no exception. It is a spectacular new addition to the census of this scarce St. Louis bank as this is the initial First Charter note of any denomination to be reported from this charter. It also represents a very rare type for the entire state of Missouri. According to the National Currency Foundation census, there were, heretofore, only three 1875 $20s reported for the state, none of which are from St. Louis. Also, of those other three known pieces, none has been publicly offered in over 25 years. Fortuitously, this Newman Part VIII offering is a most pleasing note with four wide margins, vivid colors, and sharply penned signatures. It has none of the usual problems that often plague these early type notes. Vignettes show a highly dramatic scene from the Battle of Lexington at left, and Columbia marching with an archetypal farmer, sailor, and mechanic at right. It is easily the finest of the now four-known 1875 $20s from the \"Show Me\" state.
