The site is best known as the location of the oldest city in the world, dating from c. 8000 BCE. During the Roman period the city moved to the area of the modern town, and from the 2nd century BCE the Hasmonaean and Herodian rulers built palaces and gardens at Tulul Abu al-Alaiq on the Wadi Qilt, about 2 km east of modern Jerico; a hippodrome and amphitheatre mentioned by Josephus have been tentatively identified near by at Tel al-Sammarat. Towards the middle of the 8th millennium BCE a stone wall was constructed around the hitherto open site. It survives to a height of 7 m and was twice rebuilt, the second time with a ditch 8 m wide and 2 m deep cut in the bedrock. Behind the wall stands a circular stone tower, 8.25 m high, 10 m in diameter at the base and tapering to 7 m diameter at the top.
