It was built on a spur formed by a prehistoric lava flow to the north of the mouth of the Sarnus (modern Sarno) River. Pompeii was destroyed, together with Herculaneum, Stabiae, Torre Annunziata, and other communities, by the violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE; the circumstances of their preservation make their remains a unique document of Greco-Roman life. Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Torre Annunziata were collectively declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. This particular view is of the House of Sallust, which opens on to the Via Consolare and is a famous example of the atrium tuscanicum type of early Pompeian house. The building is wide and tall, has no peristyle and is decorated in the First Style of painting. Grove Dictionary of Art.
