St. Louis, Missouri Ty. - Bank of St. Louis (1st) $10 18__ MO-45 G26. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. A unique Leney & Rollinson India paper proof with an illustrious pedigree chain. It has been over a dozen years since this was last cataloged, and in the interim, its importance has only increased. It features a unique, custom-engraved and titled, vignette for the bank, used on this $10 denomination and the exceedingly rare $50 notes from the bank. This is the only proof example known to us. It originated from the Leney & Rollinson archives where, interestingly, the Bank of St. Louis proofs ($1, $2, $3, $5, $10, $20, and $100) comprised the last pages in the original scrapbook. When John Ford owned the book, the individual proofs were removed by Barrow's Archivists in Richmond, Virginia. (Ford stressed to Barrow's in his supplied inventory that he had insured these seven proofs for $25,000). A stunning example, printed deeply on bright white India paper. The top center has the titled Partial View of St. Louis, richly detailed, with identifiable buildings and landmarks from the period. The title is underneath the vignette with the obligations across and location below. Eric researched the vignette and discovered in 1941 that it was the earliest view of St. Louis, dating it to 1814 due to the absence of the 1815-built Papin house (St. Louis Post-Dispatch October 5, 1941). The precise lettering used is exceptionally well crafted. Like in all proofs from this imprint family, the fine moir? pattern at the left end is mesmerizing. Perpendicular \"TEN\" denominations are differently styled in each end panel. Plate A. The \"Minor Stains\" noted by grading are petty as these wisps of foxing are away from the important vignette. The seven Bank of St. Louis proofs were all furiously bid upon by the leading Obsolete currency collectors attending Ford Part VIII in January 2005; Eric obtained this unique treasure for $4,025 from that sale. Only one other proof of those seven has changed hands in the past dozen years, the cited $5 proof previous to this. Likely an irreplaceable proof with this historically important, realistic view of contemporary St. Louis.
