The citadel supplanted the Fatimid palaces as the residence for the rulers of Egypt, and it attracted urban development to the area, slowing the northward expansion of the city. Most of the curtain wall was finished at the time of Salah al-Din's death; his brother al-‛Adil (reg 1200–18) added strongly fortified towers. The masonry of the citadel is inferior to that of the Fatimid gates of Cairo, but its bent entrances are more sophisticated for defense. The Mamluk sultan Baybars I (reg 1260–77) divided the citadel into two enclosures, the southernmost of which, as developed by him and by later Mamluk rulers, was less heavily fortified because the need for protection against the local inhabitants had diminished. It contained the palaces and state buildings, of which the most impressive was the dome chamber of the Dar al-‛Adl, built by the Mamluk sultan al-Nasir Muhammad (reg 1294–1340 with interruptions) in 1333–4. Known through an early 19th-century engraving as the 'Divan of Joseph', much of it was destroyed in an explosion in 1824, and the rest was cleared to make way for the mosque of Muhammad ‛Ali. Grove Dictionary of Art The complex of Sultan Hasan, erected between 1356 and 1362 by the Mamluk sultan Hasan (reg 1347–61 with interruption) is the largest and most impressive of all Mamluk buildings in Cairo. Located on the square below the citadel, the building comprises a four-iwan congregational mosque with four madrasas of varying size crammed into its corners, a huge domed mausoleum flanked by twin minarets behind the qibla iwan and, at a lower level, a market and water-tower. The once bulbous dome has been rebuilt. The massive stone exterior, punctuated by the dome and minarets, is articulated with thin vertical niches and crowned by a bold muqarnas cornice. The 28 m-high portal, designed with twin minarets above and based roughly on Anatolian models, was cleverly angled to be visible from the citadel. Its unfinished decoration gives valuable evidence of contemporary working practices. The bronze doors were the finest in medieval Cairo; in 1416 the Mamluk sultan Mu'ayyad paid a paltry sum to have them transferred to his own mosque.
