Irondale, MO - E. Harrison & Co. 5 Cents 187_. Proof. PCGS About New 50. An extremely rare Missouri scrip note proof. Missouri was not only a lead mining state, but also had rich iron deposits, which at the time were thought to be the largest in the world. Growing out of this abundance in the late 1850s was Iron County, Missouri (formed 1857), with towns named Irondale, Ironton, and Iron Mountain. Pilot Knob (another important iron deposit) was located in the county and is pictured on the $5 notes from the Exchange Bank of St. Louis. The growth of railroads made moving the iron ore efficient, and several iron companies or stores in that location issued scrip for their workers and local residents. This is a small-format change note printed on India paper by the National Bank Note Co. New-York, without protector. At the left is a finely woven corn basket with ears of corn, mostly shucked, in and around it. Titles are in the right center with outlined FIVE CENTS on black across. Payable \"In Merchandise at retail prices, at their Store.\" A small \"5\" die is at upper right, and the proprietor's engraved signature is at the bottom. Edwin Harrison also printed banknote-size format dollar-denominated scrip, on $1-2-$3-$5 sheets, known as modern proof impressions. The issuer was not in Vacca.
