PCGS About New 50.  The Civil War State of Mississippi notes varied in style and complexity as the war progressed. The initial series notes, printed on red fiber bond paper from plates engraved by the American Bank Note Co. N.Y. & N.O., are beautifully crafted, state-of-the-art types. The Criswell listings (now Shull-Criswell listings published by Whitman) separate combinations of issue dates and the dates payable in the future. This striking note $20 note shows a bright vermillion guilloche at the bottom. A wide vignette of horses pulling a wagon with a heavy load as slaves harvest cotton plants is at top center. Bold \"20\" dies are in the upper corners. Oval portraits are in the lower corners: a young woman in fancy dress holding a dove at left, and Governor Pettus at the right. Slightly close here and there, but generally well framed with sharp color. Ex: Eric P.
