Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent. This is a SENC and superbly styled 1850s proof engraved by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson; India paper on the original card. The bank and series are rare, each with some nautical allegorical vignettes appropriate for the title. A train is featured at top center. Standing America (Liberty is also an interpretation), wearing a liberty cap and holding a sword and shield is at the right end. Her arm is draped around the top of an enormous and elaborate \"1\" counter. At lower left is a sidewheel steamer at dusk. Above, underneath the Auditor's Seal are two merfolk, tails entwined. Noted as \"Cut Cancelled,\" but the cancellations are razor thin in the signature blocks; also noted with a \"Minor Stain at Bottom Left.\" The $3 proof from this series sold for $2,233 in Very Choice New 64PPQ in the Newman Part VI sale. With a very striking design and extremely rare. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society\n\nRealized $1292.50. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18297.
