This Lucas & Simonds proof is from a different series with an engraved \"Oct. 1st, 1852\" date and \"St. Louis, Mo.\" at the left. These were payable \"in Specie\" to \"Thomas Smith or bearer on demand.\" This tie note is St. Louis to Springfield in contrast to the two-signature demand note series which is vague about any city of issue, with only the state engraved. An India paper proof mounted on original card by Danforth, Bald & Co., Cincinnati. The wide hay-harvesting scene is sandwiched between the two parts of the title, and seated Tellus holding a globe with a bird atop is at right. The familiar vignette showing crouching Ceres and a standing Native American princess is at the left. The engravers cleverly opted to add some interest by having the blade of the sickle cross the frame line and the headdress feathers brush against the scrollwork of the \"1\" die above. Plate C. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Card Stock\" as made. Some minor faults are noted as \"Small Edge Tears.\" Stamped on the back by the American Bank Note Company, but we are uncertain of the exact lot from which it originated in the 1990 sale.
