Confederate States of America -Developmental Essay Proof for Straker & Sons $50 Chemicograph Back Design. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. A final example from this historic sextet of Straker & Sons developmental essay proofs for the chemicograph backs. This superb example is nearly complete. Printed in black ink. As previous, the card measures 30.0cm by 22.0cm, and the note within is 19.0cm by 8.0cm, with the visible plate embossing delineating the margin. The Washington portrait has been considerably strengthened; the background in the frame has some very loose hatching. Flanking the portrait are very interesting female figures. The one at left wears a laurel wreath while the other has a crown like Moneta's. They each hold a fasces with the denomination, wear a sword across their right shoulders, possess wings, and have shell-like lower parts. Titles are on both ends in a scrolling banner, which is shaded on the underside for a three-dimensional appearance. As on the $5 back proof, some design elements extend beyond the frame. Most of the shading appears complete. This state appears identical to the that of example in the 1987 Ball-Richmond lot. A gorgeous, well detailed, and extremely rare impression. Nearly superb.
