The Treasury Notes are also known as Coin Notes because they were payable in either gold or silver coin. At the left is the distinctively bearded portrait of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Stanton's portrait also appears on the 50 Cents Fourth Issue Fractional notes. This earlier 1890 type uses a large brown Treasury Seal on the face and a solid green back with ONE across the center. This evenly circulated example displays nice color for the grade and represents the most common Friedberg number for the design; thus, it is the ideal candidate for type. Ex: Eric P.
