(St. James), MO - Wm. James-Maramec Iron Works $3 Feb. 1, 1869. PCGS About New 53PPQ. The $3 denomination note issued by the Maramec Iron Works has a superbly rendered National Bank Note Company design. This is the third member of a cut, matched serial 777-numbered sheet that has been in the Newman Collection for decades. The face style is similar to the others offered here, with a brown undertint on the frame with upper corner flourishes and signature area guilloche, but without a numeral protector. This denomination has the classic vignette, The Mill Door, at top center. In the life-like scene, a man on a pack horse, child, dog, and fowl congregate by the mill; a woman crossing the bridge next to the spinning waterwheel approaches. The artistic perspective is interesting and realistic. Upper corners show a woman in a kerchief at left and a large \"3\" die at upper right. The engraved \"Wm. James\" signature is at the bottom. The intricate, with circular details, uses micro-dies and large round \"3\" dies at each end with the obligation at the center. With light handling only, this bold example will certainly be a highlight in any three dollar Obsolete note collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
