St. Louis, MO - Exchange Bank of St. Louis, at___ $20 18__ MO-10 UNL. Proof. PCGS New 62. The larger denominations from the Exchange Bank were printed on $20A-$20B-$50A-$100B sheets. The Haxby listings for the $20, $50, and $100 denominations are not orderly as he did not have the 1990 ABN Sale sheets to examine. Eric has studied these notes, using the imprint, monogram, and vignette structure changes observed here as evidence of their series progression. This is printed from the earlier plate type. It is a plate B India paper $20 with the imprint of Bald, Cousland & Co. Philada. & New York at the bottom and without the ABC monogram. A beautifully designed denomination boasting the American day-to-day reality exhibited on this imprint's craft. Iron miners are at work using sledgehammers and other implements in the wide vignette at top left, appropriate for Bogy's connection with the Pilot Knob iron ore deposit. To the right is an oval portrait of a girl with a horn shielding her eyes from the sun. Male portraits in ornate frames are in the lower corners, with Lewis V. Bogy at the left; the other unidentified portrait might be the bank's cashier Robert E. Carr, later bank president. A light orange-yellow tint plate was used with a deeper orange outlining the white \"XX\" protector beneath the mining vignette. \"Hole Punch Cancelled,\" as made, and problem-free. This has a penciled \".50\" (a well-spent 50 cents for some lucky collector) on the blank back. This $20 proof was apparently not part of the 1939 Wismer purchase, but was obtained later.
