Built by the emperor Shah Jahan (reg 1628–58) between 1639 and 1648, the Lal Qil‛a was the citadel of his new city Shahjahanabad. The ramparts are provided with a battlemented parapet, machicolations and embrasures. The ornamental cusps of the parapet's merlons are a typical Shah Jahan-period feature. The fort was laid out on the western bank of the Yamuna, while a moat protected the city side. The private palaces are arranged in a line on a high terrace, facing the river on the east and a chār-bāgh garden on the west. The buildings, from south to north, are presently known as the Mumtaz Mahal (now a museum), the Rang Mahal ('Painted Palace'), the Khwabgah ('Sleeping Chamber'), the Divan-i Khas ('Hall of Private Audience'), the Hamman ('bath') and the Shah Burj ('King's Tower'). Most are flat-roofed, single-storey pavilions built either of marble or brick masonry covered with fine polished white plaster. The façades usually have a line of cusped arches of equal size supported by piers or pillars and protected by a broad chajjā. Most have four chatrīs at the corners of the roof. The interiors consist of intersecting arcades dividing the space into square or rectangular bays. The most elaborately decorated are the Rang Mahal and Divan-i Khas, which are embellished with painted decoration, gilt, inlaid floral patterns and sumptuously carved marble. The cusped arches are outlined in inlaid stone, emphasizing their graceful shapes. The effect is luxurious, yet restrained and elegant.
