TN-10 $100 Act of February 24, 1815 Treasury Note Remainder PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ.  For decades, the War of 1812 Treasury Note issues have achieved the sustained recognition and price appreciation they deserve. A contributing factor was the disposition of the Ford collection notes and sheets, many from the Boyd holdings or from currency collecting and writing legend Julian Blanchard, an early member of the Essay-Proof Society. The War of 1812 Treasury Notes from the Newman Collection, new to the collecting community, are mostly high quality. This is an unusual, large format style note engraved and printed by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. on watermarked UNITED STATES bond paper with color security threads. At top right is an aggressive eagle with arrows in one talon and olive branch in the other. Intricate lathe work panel ends each show ONE HUNDRED in an oblong cartouche; counters in opposite corners match. Across the note, the detailed obligation specifies 5.4% interest bearing rate of the series. This interesting and very rare type is listed as Hessler X85. It appears that there are six or seven remainders, three of which originated from the uncut sheet in Ford VI, and a few India paper proofs. No issued notes are known, and if one did exist it would be a six-figure Federal Note. Over the years, the scant offering of individual remainder notes has only climbed in value. The Ford-Blanchard triple was cut into single notes and the \"B\" position note sold for $17,250 in November 2012 at Stack's Bowers (PMG About Uncirculated 53, flaws). We sold a Remainder in 2005 at Dallas Signature Sale #364 for $10,350 (About New). Because these notes were printed tightly without a \"gutter\" between the frame lines, they were prone to having nicks in their engraved borders. Premium quality examples are thus difficult to find. This example is exceptional and perhaps the finest of the type. Bold and impressively engraved by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co., and projecting the emerging strength of America and the role the country would play after the Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 hostilities.
