In the grand Savoy gardens in Piedmont, known chiefly through the prints of the Theatrum Sabaudiae, curving staircases were particularly favored, but more common elsewhere were the double stairs inspired by 16th-century gardens and ultimately derived from the remains of ancient terraced structures at Praeneste and the gardens of Lucullus in Rome. Similar designs continued into the 18th century, as at the Villa Carlotta on Lake Como (completed before 1743), where superimposed double staircases along the central axis likewise link narrow terraces.
