One of the great Missouri notes in the Newman Collection, featuring Columbus on both front and back as he sights, then reaches, the New World. This short-lived bank issued First Charters only, and this piece is the second of two known and the first to be offered since the other note's single appearance in a 1989 auction. Hannibal, of course, is famous as the birthplace and boyhood home of Mark Twain, but by the time this bank was chartered in 1865 Twain had gone west to seek his fortune. Hannibal had changed significantly since Twain's youth, having become a regional commercial center and a transportation hub for both river and rail traffic. PCGS noted pinholes (there are a few) and small edge splits (which affect absolutely nothing). Considering the rarity of this giant of a National note, such issues are trivial. Serious collectors of Hannibal material, Missouri notes or great Nationals in general should plan to view and vie for this prize.   Ex: Eric P.
