The name Elephanta is derived from a stone elephant, removed (with other sculptures) to Bombay. The five Brahmanical caves located on the western hill are more impressive in scale and are decorated with sculpture of exceptional beauty. Cave 1, the finest, is unusual in that it is cut into the rock from three different sides. The eastern and western breaches lead to courts that have entrances to the pillared hall of the main shrine. The central breach enters a portico that leads directly into the hall (approximately 39.6 m across). On either side of the portico are reliefs of Shiva as Lord of the Dance (Nattaraja) and in his form as the supreme teacher (Dakshinamurti). The sanctum within is of the four-door (sarvatobhadra) variety and enshrines a linga. Large (3.9 m high) door-guardians are carved on the outer walls of the sanctum. Directly across the hall from the central breach and entrance portico is a corresponding blind-portico deep in the rock. This contains a colossal (5.18 m high) triple bust of Shiva in his forms Vamadeva, Tatpurusha and Aghora—one of the most powerful creations of Indian art. On either side are guardian figures and relief panels showing Shiva as the 'lord who is half woman' (Ardhanarishvara) and as the bearer of the River Ganga (Gangadhara). The pillared hall itself has niches in each corner, which contain sculptures of Shiva playing dice with Parvati, the marriage of the divine couple (Kalyanasundara), and Shiva destroying the demon Andhaka and subduing Ravana who shakes Mt Kailasa. These corner niches represent an incorporation of the five-shrined scheme ( pañcāyatana) within the hall, a configuration seen in later structural temples. The eastern and western entrances to the cave have additional chapels that also contain reliefs. The eastern shrine, which has a cruciform plan, contains fine images of the Seven Mother Goddesses (saptamatrkas), Bhairava, Ganesha and Kartikeya. A large inscription, apparently from this cave complex, was removed by the Portuguese in an effort to have it deciphered. As the inscription has now disappeared, the patronage and date of the caves are a subject of debate. Iconographic and stylistic considerations suggest the monument was made for the Pashupata sect, probably in the second quarter of the 6th century.
