Michelozzo's design, however, with its relatively regular plan organized around a central colonnaded courtyard, its rear garden flanked by loggias, and with its three-storey façades crowned by massive cornices, became a model for early Renaissance architecture. The graduated stone facing, from the rusticated basement to the smooth masonry of the second floor, and the round-headed mullioned windows can be traced to 14th-century palaces, for example the Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Davanzati. The Corinthian cornice, however, is derived from Roman examples, and the rustication may have been thought evocative of such ancient monuments as the Etruscan walls at Fiesole. The interior of the palace was splendidly decorated, especially the chapel with the fresco cycle by Benozzo Gozzoli and its elaborately carved wooden fittings and coffered ceilings, which perhaps follow Michelozzo's designs.
