Administered by the Jōdo-sect temple Kōtokuin, this monumental bronze sculpture of Amida is 11.36 m high. The original Daibutsu was apparently a wooden sculpture c. 24 m high, commissioned in 1238 at the behest of the shogunate by a monk called Jōkō ( fl 13th century) at Fukasawa, the Hōjō enclave in Hase. It seems to have been conceived in imitation of the Daibutsu at Tōdaiji. In 1241 a Daibutsuden (Great Buddha hall) was built over it, and in 1243 the image was formally consecrated. In 1252, under the Hōjō regent Tokiyori, a bronze cast of the Daibutsu was made from the earlier wooden figure. The sculpture has stood in the open since at least 1495, when the Daibutsuden was destroyed by a tsunami (a very high sea wave).
