The temples stand within a high mud-brick enclosure wall and occupy the north-west part of the sacred space. Activity of Pepy I (reg c. 2289–c. 2256 BCE) is referred to in the Greco-Roman temple, and the 11th-Dynasty king Mentuhotpe II (reg c. 2008–c. 1957 BCE) built a chapel to Hathor and her son Harsomtus which also celebrated his own status. The oldest building in the main temple complex, and the oldest such structure still standing, is the mammisi (birth house) of Nectanebo I (reg 380–362 BCE), and it was replaced by a larger birth house decorated in the early 2nd century CE under Trajan and Hadrian. Other subsidiary buildings include a mud-brick sanatorium and a sacred lake, both to the west of the temple. The Greco-Roman Temple of Hathor is the grandest and most richly decorated of its period. The earliest dated inscriptions refer to Ptolemy XII (reg 80–58 BCE; 55–51BCEc. It was built of sandstone on the conventional Egyptian plan, but only the inner apartments were completed. These comprise the outer hypostyle hall with twenty-four columns, an inner hypostyle hall with six columns, two vestibules and the usual suite of service rooms and cult chambers surrounding a free-standing sanctuary. A remarkable feature is the use of the emblem of Hathor, the Hathor head, which also forms part of the naos-shaped sistrum, a musical instrument used in her worship. The capitals of the outer hypostyle hall are in the form of naos sistra, their four Hathor heads facing the cardinal points, and the head motif also occurs in the friezes above the main entrance, throughout the temple interior and on the exterior rear wall. This last, colossal head was gilded and covered by a canopy. Three levels of crypts were constructed; their reliefs record a vast range of sculptural types, few of which are otherwise preserved; they also give details of their materials and dimensions. The roof of the temple contains two suites of rooms dedicated to Osiris. Behind the Temple of Hathor is a temple commemorating the birth of Isis.
