Magnificently rendered in all regards, this is an impressive proof on India paper by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. Phila. & NY. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Cardstock,\" as made. A dynamic Native American bison-hunting vignette is at top center between \"100\" dies. The left end shows an oval portrait of a Native American chief. Judging from the portrait painted by Charles Bird King (held by the Library Company of Philadelphia). This is most likely White Cloud, leader of the Ioway who in 1824 met with President Monroe and Thomas McKenney, Superintendent of Indian Affairs, because the U.S. government wanted to buy tribal land (shsmo.org). The painting by King and the engraving on the note both show the Chief wearing a medal, most likely a James Monroe Indian Peace Medal. The right end shows Revolutionary War frontier fighter, George Rogers Clark at the top and the legendary Daniel Boone at the bottom with a denomination block between. A most stylish example that is well margined on all sides. There were two examples in the 1990 American Bank Note Company Archives sale, and this is possibly one of them.
