Theatrical contests had been held in that place since the early 5th century bc, and there are traces of a modest earlier theatre. The existing monumental version, capable of accommodating an estimated 15,000 spectators, with marble seats for dignitaries, a limestone auditorium and conglomerate retaining walls, was built c. 330 BCE, according to literary sources and inscriptions. The rest of the Sanctuary of Dionysos was refurbished at the same time with the addition of a Doric stoa (l. 62 m) and a new, tetrastyle prostyle, Doric temple of Dionysos.
