St. Louis, Missouri Territory - Bank of St. Louis (1st) $1 March 11, 1817 MO-45 G14. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Notes from the Bank of St. Louis, Missouri Territory, Leney & Rollinson-engraved plate series are among the most attractive and interesting in the Obsolete currency canon. Though they are not color tinted and did not use complex dies and counters like the notes from the 1850s, the exceptionally well-crafted and custom-designed vignettes for the bank are beautiful and reflect a period-art style not seen on many issues. They are rarely encountered or offered for sale, except when distinguished cabinets like the Newman Collection are cataloged. New York's Leney & Rollinson engraved the plates and printed these notes for the bank with their exacting security features (the notes were never counterfeited) and finely articulated vignettes on each denomination from $1 to the highest $100 note type. The lowest denomination $1 notes would have been heavily used in circulation, making choice examples harder to come by. Printed on fine paper with red silk fibers. The top center vignette displays a finely detailed eagle, both wings pointing to the right, perched upon a cannon. Engraved only a few years after the Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812, this patriotic image projects American strength and resolve. The title sits within the center of the obligations across, and the location and written date are at bottom center. There are three oval \"1\" dies, two that flank the vignette and one at the central base. Finely engraved ends show a moir? pattern at left and shaded pattern at right; each has a differently styled perpendicular ONE denomination. Plate A. No. 462. Signed by John B. N. Smith as cashier and S. Hammond as bank president. Noted by grading with \"Small Edge Tears,\" which are petty nicks in the ample margins that are all around. The paper integrity is exceptional with some red fibers plainly seen. This is one of the finest examples seen by us and vastly superior to 1981 Vacca note. This beautifully rendered design reflects the spirit of our expanding nation and the concept of Manifest Destiny following the War of 1812. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
