This community, situated on the banks of the Missouri River to the northwest of St. Louis, was founded in 1765, making it the third oldest settlement west of the Mississippi River. Predominantly populated by French traders, trappers and colonists from Canada, the town became an American settlement as part of the Louisiana Purchase and served as the jumping off point for the Lewis & Clark Voyage of Discovery in 1804. When Missouri joined the union in 1821, St. Charles became the temporary capital while the permanent capital at Jefferson City was planned and constructed, serving in that role until the seat of government was moved in 1826. The building in which the legislature met, which housed a hardware store on the bottom floor, still exists and is a state historic site. Perhaps because of this bank's early entry into the market, it was the only bank in this community to receive a federal charter. Despite the fact that it issued continuously from 1865 through 1935, large notes are scarce and seldom offered, with early examples conspicuously absent from the census. No First Charters are known, and only three Brown Backs are reported, with only one, a low grade piece, having been available since 1980. Even the massive Sweeney and Denny collections were represented only by Blue Seals, with Track & Price showing only one such offering since 2000. This example is pen signed.  Ex: Eric P.
