There's no background, but it appears to be an exterior scene.  There are three men in the illustration; two standing, and one being carried.  There appears to have been a skirmish, as all three men appear to have been beaten in a fight, or possibly playing rugby. The man on the left looks a little better than the other two.  He's dressed a little differently than the other two men.  They're wearing dark trousers and white shirts - badly tattered.  This man's wearing what appear to be knee high boots with loose pants, tucked into them (or possibly knickers with buttons undone) and a white sweater with dark trim at collar, cuffs and hem.  His hair is badly mussed, but his waxed mustache is undisturbed.  He's stepping forward, but looking back to his right.  His right hand is holding the right leg of his fallen comrade.  The man on the right is walking with his back to the viewer, but the tears in his clothes are obvious.  He's reaching behind himself, holding the arms of the fallen man. The man in the middle is being carried, as he's in the worst shape of the three of them.  His shirt is ripped up, his pants are torn, and he appears to have a black eye.  His upper body is being carried, and his right leg, but his left leg is dragging.  The caption reads;  When they got up and started to count the survivors a sizable cove remained on the ground.
