It opened as a concentration camp in 1937 and ran throughout the war. The United States Army liberated Buchenwald on April 11, 1945. During these years, Buchenwald was host to a wide variety of horrors. Prisoners died in many ways at Buchenwald – through overwork, sickness, torture, execution, and experimentation. When the Americans liberated Buchenwald, they found tanned and tattood skins, as well as products reportedly made from human skin, such as book covers and lamp shades. The Buchenwald prisoners suffered through extremely hard labor and spent their time surrounded by death. <br><br>The three-mark example here was issued inside the camp, while the half mark Auβenkommando note would have been issued by an outside labor force and used as an incentive for superior performance. Some of these were counterstamped, as in this case, with the name of the associated subcamp, here SS-Ko.
