(Unknown) - O. P. Thorp, Sutler 17th U. S. Inf'y 1 Cent Cardboard Chit Undated (ca. 1860s). PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. An extremely rare and circulated cardboard chit issued by O. P. Thorp as sutler to the 17th United States Infantry. Thorp's background as sutler is not listed in the standard references, nor can he be traced to his birthplace. In the Newman Collection, the chit is classified with the other Missouri private, municipal, and military scrip. However, there is no direct proof at this time that Thorp was a Missourian. The 17th Infantry is a historic unit that goes back to the War of 1812. They were reformed on May 3, 1861, and fought in the east along with the Army of the Potomac. They suffered heavy losses early at Fredericksburg. They also saw significant action at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (where there is a monument dedicated to them), and the Battle of the Wilderness. On orange cardboard with rounded corners as made. Printed across in black is \"GOOD FOR / One Cent / In Merchandise\". The title is: \"O. P. Thorp, Sutler 17th U.S. Inf'y.\" Noted with \"Small Edge Split at top Left.\" There are some minor top edge scuffs, but the eye appeal is excellent. Although the full sutler identity and information is unavailable at this time, the association with the illustrious 17th Infantry is important and this note stands tall on that fact. Ex: Eric P.
