It became the chief town of an important region and from the 3rd century was the capital of the province of Belgica Secunda. It was then, and has remained, the centre of a network of routes from the sea to Burgundy and from Belgium to Germany and the Paris region. Christianity was probably introduced to the area towards the end of the 3rd century. The broad outlines of the modern city are based on the Roman city plan. The Roman cardo and decumanus intersected at the centre, where the Place Royale was laid out from 1758. The 3rd-century walls dictated the oval outline of the medieval city until the 14th century. The lines of the walls are partly preserved in later boulevards, and their position is also marked by the 2nd-century Porte de Mars, the largest Roman triumphal arch in France. It is triple-arched, with a Corinthian order.
