He was one of the settlers of Sierra county and for many years operated a stage line between Nevada City and Downieville and owned the famous Mountain house in Sierra county.  Upon the election of President McKinley, \"Dan\" Cole, as he was more generally known, was appointed Coiner at the United States Mint in San Francisco, which office he held until July 8, 1907.
