They constitute the most profuse and coherent decorative programme of any mainland Greek temple. Much of the architectural sculpture, carved of local Pentelic marble, survives, albeit in a damaged state: two pediments each originally contained some 20–5 figures carved in the round; 92 high-relief panels (metopes) of the external Doric frieze expounded themes of hubris and nemesis and the triumph of civilization over barbarism, allegorizing Athenian victories against the Persians (east Gigantomachy; west Amazonomachy; north Sack of Troy; south Centauromachy); and a low-relief Ionic frieze (perhaps the Panathenaic procession) ran continuously for some 160 m (525 ft) high atop the cella wall inside the colonnade where it would have been difficult to see despite optical refinements in its carving and the polychromy and metal accoutrements that were also present elsewhere.
