A centre of Christian pilgrimage from the early 4th century CE, it survived the Arab conquest in 636 but was in ruins when it was conquered by the Crusaders at the end of the 11th century. It became the seat of a Latin archbishopric, and Crusader churches included a new basilica over the Grotto of the Annunciation and a church dedicated to St Joseph on the alleged site of the carpenter's shop. After the Battle of Hattin (1187), it was alternately under Ayyubid and Crusader control, but the Christian monuments were razed in 1263 on the orders of the Mamluk sultan Baybars I (reg 1260–77). It was only after 1620, when the Druze amir Fakhr al-Din II (reg 1590–1635) allowed the Franciscans to settle there, that Nazareth slowly revived as a centre of pilgrimage.
