(St. Louis, MO) - Page & Bacon \"have deposited in this\" Quincy City Bank $1 Certificate of Deposit 18__. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. This is the first of four tie-note certificate of deposit proofs payable at the Quincy City Bank, Illinois. The bank's president was Newton Flagg, of the Banking House of Flagg & Savage, and the cashier was J.C. Woodford. At first glance, the intended notes appear to be demand notes from the Quincy City Bank. The obligation text indicates their origination from a deposit by Page & Bacon \"in this Bank.\" An India paper proof mounted on the original card by Danforth, Bald & Co. Philada. & New-York. On this elegant layout, the title and texts are at top center, a ONE counter is at upper left, and a scrollwork and lathe work die is at top right; the rest of the note shows a progress and industry-themed vignette that sweeps across the face. Starting at upper left, with smokestacks in the background are a standing mechanic, sailor, and embodiments of Education and Home Industry; evidently, some vignette elements were combined since the three knee areas (gray, white, and black) don't quite work with the two women's upper portions. The central area shows a train passing a hill with an industrialized city and mountains in the far background, and a seated mechanic gestures with his hammer to the ONE counter in the corner. Grading notes: \"Paper Toned; Minor Edge Damage; Piece Added at Top Right.\" This example and the two to follow, appear to have originated from the 1990 American Bank Note Company Sale as part of lot 366 based on descriptions of \"aging and brittleness,\" which correspond with this note's appearance.
