Licinius Lucullus, where the court was installed before it moved to the royal residence of Castel Capuano. With these fortresses, the Normans established two points of surveillance, one facing the hinterland and the other looking out to sea, working together in a defensive system based on strongpoints around the city at Pozzuoli, Aversa, Acerra and Afragola. With the succession of the Angevins in 1266, Naples was the capital of a great kingdom, and there are records of a further increase in the population: in 1278 there were nearly 30,000 inhabitants. Under Charles I (reg 1266–85) Castel Capuano was restored, and the southern stretch of city walls was enlarged, while Castel dell'Ovo was transformed into a public building and became the seat of the Treasury.
