Clear Water or Gads Hill, MO - Clear Water Lumber Company 50 Cents Post Note Dec. 15, 1873. PCGS Very Fine 30. This is an interesting company scrip series with different sizes and styles. Eric's research places this with Missouri scrip notes; its St. Louis imprint and Gads Hill location provide key evidence. Notes from the issuer were also properly sold under Missouri in the Schingoethe sale. This series is incorrectly published in Wallace G. Lee's Michigan reference (issuer Lee CLE-1). Gads Hill is located in southeastern Missouri, a resource-rich area through which the railroad passed. The James-Younger gang robbed the train in that location on January 31, 1874, and notes from this issue were in circulation at that time. This is a much smaller format note than the dollar-denominated pieces that follow. Printed uniface on white bond paper by R. P. Studley Co., St. Louis. A diminutive vignette of a woman in an ornamental frame is at lower left. Titles and obligations (\"void without the company's stamp with date\") are across with white outlined FIFTY CENTS on black in the center. There are two engraved signatures and a circular 1873 ink stamp on the face, which were necessary to properly issue the note. At the far right is an additional blue stamp, perpendicular to the face, stating that this was \"NOT issued for General Circulation...\" to comply with Federal law. Not stamped on the blank back.
