PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent.    Appropriately, Eric P. Newman collected Puerto Rico and Danish West Indies notes alongside his other Territorial and Western notes, due to their geo-political relationship with the United States. Puerto Rico was established as a Spanish Colony on Columbus' second voyage to the New World. (According to Smithsonian.com, the island was initially called San Juan Bautista by the Spanish.) A limited amount of paper currency was issued under Spanish auspices beginning in the early 19th century. Few of these earliest notes are known to collectors today. Spanish and Colonial branch-minted eight reales coins, and their fractional \"bits,\" were integral to their global trade. The familiarity and sound silver content of the 8 reales coin made it accepted worldwide. Those coins were legal tender in the United States until 1857. Because of that, these paper substitutes were not a popular answer to local coin shortages. Printed on laid paper from a crudely styled plate. A Paschal Lamb (or Lamb of God, symbolizing John the Baptist and Christ) is the central vignette on the face. A portion of the back text is seen across the top corner. A well printed example, and the face printed portion is nearly entirely on the paper. The noted \"Edge Damage; Minor Stains\" are confined to the margins. This has an appealing, vibrant appearance and is a historical, early note from the Spanish possession that evolved into our present day Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Ex: Eric P.
