It is a little known fact that, for the first dozen years that National Bank notes were produced, the actual printing of the notes took place in New York City and was handled by one of the three authorized Treasury subcontractors: the American Bank Note Company, the National Bank Note Company, and the Continental Bank Note Company. Both the faces and backs were engraved by the various companies, which provided the paper as well.
