This is a quartet of unusual scrip, likely from Wichita or Topeka, that skirted Federal law against private currency notes by its obligations. Like the V. F. Ferguson scrip listed in Whitfield, this note is part of the genre that falls into the \"Not Intended to be Used as Money\" class. The size and design style is identical to those Ferguson notes. Printed two sides on bond paper, in green, with the imprint of J. M. Padgett Coupon Co., Topeka on the face margin. Title and obligation are across the face. Fancy back with a small vignette at the center flanked by the denomination. Includes 10, 25, 50 cents, and $1. Well used. All VG with normal soiling, the $1 with internal splitting. Not fully attributed, but scarce or rare. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society\n\n

From Newman VIII (Heritage Auctions, 11/2017), lot 29166, realized $126.
