Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ.  The $3 proof from this exceptional series is another Superb Gem with vibrant color and dark, contrasting vignettes. An India paper proof by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York. The color tint plate is similar to the other denominations, with a complete light orange tint that has a micro-lettered pattern THREE across the note with deeper orange around most of the frame. Like the $1 and $2 proofs, the left and right top corners have deeper tinted octagonal counters. At lower left, a curious horse pokes his head over the fence separating him from the cattle. At lower right is an oval portrait of James Buchanan, who despite being historically considered one of the least effective American Presidents, appears on many Obsolete banknotes. There is one $3 proof known in private hands as we have cited, from the Krause Collection and originally discovered in the Wellstood album. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" as made.
