It was a type of temple know as a speos. Speoi, or rock temples, are typical features of New Kingdom. They are found in Middle and Upper Egypt; in Lower Nubia, where Ramesses II (reg c. 1279–c. 1213 bc) had six speoi cut into the cliffs (at Beit el-Wali, Gerf Hussein, Wadi Sabū', el-Derr and Abu simbel), and at el-Lessiya and Abu Hoda; and in the 25th Dynasty capital, Gebel Barkal. Several rock temples are located on quarrying or mining sites (such as Akhmim and Kanais). In some cases underground quarries seem to have been reused as sanctuaries. Ancient cave sanctuaries could also have been enlarged into speoi. This particular image only shows the village. There is a wall around the town of the same mudbrick construction as the buildings inside it. There are the remains of some square foundations of small buildings outside the walls. The enclosed area of the town is completely filled with palm trees, a contrast from the surrounding desert.
