St. Joseph & Hannibal, MO - W. H. Gross per Woolworth & Co. & Others 5 Cents Undated (1860s). PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. This is a very rare note payable in multiple locations across the continent from New York to Denver. The career paths of C. C. Woolworth and David Halliday Moffat are of interest. After experience in book and stationary stores in Syracuse and New York City, Calvin Colton Woolworth in 1856 started his own business in Omaha, Nebraska, adding stores in St. Joseph, Missouri, Atchison, Kansas (of which we have no information), and Denver, Colorado (Woolworth & Moffatt in 1859). It took Moffat almost six weeks to bring the Omaha inventory to Denver by covered wagon. New York paper dealers Woolworth & Graham were in partnership from 1862-1869 (postalmuseum.si.edu). In May 1864, C.C. Woolworth was advertising the sale of a book store located in \"one of the most important towns in Missouri\" and also searching for \"A young man to take charge of a Western Book Store.\" (The American Literary Gazette and Publishers' Circular). This indicates that the St. Joseph store was being sold and that Moffat may have left his employment at the Denver store that year. David Moffatt had become a real estate millionaire in Omaha and cashier for the Bank of Nebraska by 1859 at the age of twenty. But due to debt from real estate and bank failures, he went to work for C.C. Woolworth in Denver, where he prospered. Moffat is well-known for his tireless efforts to build a railroad line over the Rocky Mountains, and the tunnel under the Continental Divide, completed after his death, is today known as Moffat tunnel. This small format bill was lithographed by Woolworth & Graham, N. Y. (who evidently had a printing business in conjunction with their paper dealership). Light red tint across outlines a deeper red \"5\" die protector. Three sets of titles are across the top: \"Woolworth & Co., St. Joseph & Hannibal, Mo. / Woolworth & Moffatt, Denver, C.T., / S. B. Woolworth, Jr. Omaha, Neb. / Woolworth & Graham, New York.\" That list covers three states, one territory (Colorado), and five cities, making this one of the most sprawling tie notes in Obsolete currency. Ends show a perpendicular train vignette at left with a \"5\" die above and a lathe work border at the right. Fully signed by W. H. Gross (later listed with a Hartford location and as an officer in the American Book Trade Association) and with the printed numeral 1189 above a tiny \"Woolworth & Graham, N.Y.\" Noted with \"Small Edge Tears; Stains.\" The series and type was not in Ford's territorial collection (Ford Part XX sale). The Vacca collection had a remainder, lot 523, which realized $1,050. This issued note is historically more significant than that punch-hole \"specimen.\" The multi-state and city locations and association with the influential businessmen David Moffat and C. C.
