St. Louis, Missouri Territory - Bank of St. Louis (1st) $3 Nov. 18, 1817 MO-45 G22. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. The $3 Bank of St. Louis is another handsomely designed type. The pastoral main vignette is reminiscent of the Washington Seasons Medal (Baker 170; Belden 12, \"The Sheperd\"). Another attractively graded example that well complements the other denominations from the Newman Collection offered in this sale. Printed on red fiber banknote paper by Leney & Rollinson. At top center, a farmer plows his field behind paired oxen. A tree in the foreground has richly detailed branches hanging over the scene (this especially favors the design of the mentioned medal, \"The Shepherd\"). To the right foreground is a cornucopia symbolizing agricultural Plenty. The title, bisected by the vignette, is across the center with obligations and location underneath. End panels are similar to the other denominations in the series. Finely engraved ends show a moir? pattern with perpendicular THREE at left and a shaded lathe work pattern with an oval \"3\" die at right. Plate A. No. 594. Signed by John B. N. Smith as cashier and S. Hammond as bank president. Noted with \"Minor Rust Stains; Small Edge Tears.\" The faults are minor and this is a well-printed, solid example. We would estimate less than ten are known in all grades, and they are very rarely offered for sale, privately or publicly.
