Because of Washington's important victory in Princeton (1777), the trustees of what was then called the College of New Jersey commissioned a portrait of the general by Charles Wilson Peale. Washington's agreement hinged upon the inclusion of his friend General Hugh Mercer in the 1783-4 composition George Washington at the Battle of Princeton. The dramatic adaptation by Casilear, Durand & Co., known as The Death of General Mercer, shows the bayoneted Mercer dying in surgeon Benjamin Rush's arms as Washington gestures toward the battle in the distance. Barely seen, a rider approaches from afar with the white flag of surrender. The genuine note is known to us only as the proof in the Ford Collection. However, the note was copied in the period, and one flaw is in the Justice vignette, where the scales are in the wrong hand compared to the genuine.
