PCGS Very Choice New 64.  An extremely rare $5 denomination from this Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York & Chicago engraved and printed series. This is the only proof with red protector known to us in private hands. Printed on India paper and mounted on its original card. An allegorical female with Mechanic's tools sits at the shore at top left. A clipper ship is at sail in the lower right corner. The red \"5\" protector is at the top center between the vignette and comptroller's seal. The only other example of this type is the bond paper Specimen sold in the second Krause sale in March 2010 for $2,990. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Cardstock\" as made.
