It served as the katholikon of the Chora Monastery; none of the conventual buildings survives. The church was rebuilt in its present form c. 1316–21 and decorated with wall paintings and mosaics commissioned by Theodore Metochites (1270–1332). The building was converted to a mosque about 1510 (Turk. Kariye Camii); it was restored under the direction of Paul Underwood between 1948 and 1958 and is now preserved as a museum.
