East St. Louis, IL - Illinois River Packet Co. 25 Cents Undated (1850-60s). PCGS Fine 15. Another extremely rare and unusual steamboat scrip issuer note. The Illinois River Packet Co. was founded in 1858 with D. J. Hancock, the note's signer, as secretary. The company's stock was made up from several previously independent boats that joined the firm. This note is identical in style to the Alton & St. Louis Packet Co. notes and was printed by same firm, though not identified by imprint. The central vignette shows a steamboat in three-quarter view coming toward the viewer on the tree-lined river; the town is in the distance, and a large tree limb is in the water ahead. Counters are in the upper counters, and the obligation reads: \"GOOD FOR TWENTY FIVE CENTS/ Receivable for Freight Passage & other dues.\" Well margined all around and with ample paper body. This is the first East St. Louis note from the period we have seen, and might be unique. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
