The predecessor of the present church was a chapel of St Lorenz zum Heiligen Grabe (documented 1235) attached to the parish of Fürth. St Lorenz first became an independent parish in the second half of the 13th century. Construction of the Gothic church began in the late 13th century, possibly as early as 1274. The nave, built as a basilica, was begun in the 13th century and completed c. 1380. In the west façade, which is flanked by two towers, is a double portal, its tympanum embellished with reliefs, which is likely to have been complete by c. 1360. It was followed by the rose window and the pediment above it with its copiously perforated decoration, surmounted by a pinnacle. Soon after 1400 the aisles of the nave were enlarged by chapels, the outer walls of which were inserted between the existing pier buttresses. A new Late Gothic hall chancel with nave and two aisles, inspired by St Sebaldus, was built in 1439–77 (dated by a painted inscription on the south part of the west chancel wall). Three well-known architects, Konrad Heinzelmann, Conrad Roriczer and Jakob Grimm (d 1490) were involved in the construction (1439–54, 1455/6–66 and 1466–77 respectively). In competition with St Sebaldus, the relics of St Deocarus were preserved in St Lorenz from 1316, and, in the early 15th century, they received a new casket covered with silver. In the 16th century, and again in the 19th and 20th centuries, the building was subjected to extensive restorations. During World War II it suffered heavy damage from bombing and shelling (1943–5). It was reconsecrated in 1952 after extensive repairs. Further restoration to the exterior continued until 1965.
