Proof. Very Choice New 64.  One of the great titles from Wisconsin, and also one of the rarest. This $5 is the last available proof from the Newman Collection sheet, the only known proofs in private hands. The three proof denominations offered in the Newman Part VI sale were the first sold at public auction. The notes from the sheet configuration $5A-$5B-$10-$20 by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York & Chicago are very stylish. Printed on India paper and mounted on its original cardstock, this $5 proof is a very choice example. The Gothic title is across the center; the Washington portrait above is flanked by ethereal Justice and Plenty, who are beautifully detailed. At the lower left a Native American, one foot poised on a rock in the stream, prepares to launch his spear. Capital $200,000 is at the top right edge. There is only one issued note known from the bank, a Very Good $5 example with a red protector, sold in the first Krause auction for $2,645. The \"B\" position $5 PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ proof realized $3,995 in Newman Part VI. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Cardstock\" as made.
