It is situated on a hill overlooking the Arno and Mugnone valleys just northeast of Florence. A chief city of the Etruscan confederacy, it probably dates from the 9th–8th century BCE, but its first record (as Faesulae) is in 283 BCE, when it was conquered by the Romans. In 80 BCE it was occupied by the forces of the dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla, and a splendid town sprang up, which was conquered by barbarians in CE 405. It later declined and was superseded by Florence. Fiesole is a noted tourist centre. Portions of the town's Etruscan wall survive, and the Civic Museum contains relics from Etruscan to medieval times. The well-preserved Roman baths and theatre (discovered 1809, excavated 1873) date from the 1st century BCE.
