NH-156. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This rarity is from the first date Daniel Fowle, Portsmouth imprinted series and only encountered in the most advanced collections. The faces have a very interesting type style with concealed ornamental motto features on the four highest denominations. On the $4 notes, it is NILDESPERANDUM (Nothing is to be despaired). Printed on \"durable stock\" as cited in Ford X, the notes were sturdy. This is a solid representative with superior margins all around. Minor flaws are noted as \"Edge Splits; Small Tape Repair on Back.\" The series is not often offered; the $3 denomination from April's Newman VI sale realized $3,290 in VF 35 Apparent, with that example having some paper chipped off. This solid note has superior eye appeal and represents the rare series well. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society\n\nRealized $4700.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18119.
